The Backstory Above
Welcome to The Backstory Above, a space for writers to work, learn, and gather. We exist to help members of the San Francisco literary community meet their goals, deepen their craft, continue their education, and connect with each other. We offer a peaceful environment in which to work and a variety of courses and events to support our creative practices.
Our mission is to provide a sanctuary for writers, readers and the literary and creative community on the west side of San Francisco. We value the silence necessary for our work as much as we value the opportunity to connect over conversation, and we are committed to providing opportunities for both. Ours is a silent workspace during the day that also offers designated opportunities for moving, socializing and learning together. We offer a soundproof booth for phone calls and zoom meetings, and a room for small, in-person conferences.
We are located in the mezzanine above Green Apple Books on the Park on 9th Ave in the Inner Sunset. Our building was once home to another beloved, local institution — Le Video — and we are honored to continue the building’s legacy of sharing stories in the Inner Sunset. We hope that you, too, will find inspiration and good company within these walls, but if you need an escape, we’ve got Golden Gate Park and all its enchantments as our neighbor to the North, and a number of the city’s best coffee and dining options in all other directions.
Membership is open to committed writers and readers of all stripes. We are a home for novelists, poets, journalists, academics, literary agents, booksellers, book publicists, graphic designers, illustrators and more. If this sounds like you, reach out! We welcome people of every gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability status, age, faith tradition and relationship to formal education. While our communications are in English, we will try our best with translation. We rely on our paying members to support operating costs, but we encourage all applicants regardless of financial situation. We offer sliding-scale fees whenever possible.
We expect all members to extend grace, to honor both differences and common ground, and to actively contribute to a culture of encouragement and belonging.
