Want to learn and hone the techniques of graphic writers and share original work in a small, safe, community? In this six week course, we will explore the principles of compelling comics and graphic narratives, write, draw, and share our own stories, and leave with a vision of an original work of graphic narrative.
I emphasize process and play and encourage exploring the form through low-pressure exercises. We will read graphic narratives for inspiration, and imitate their successful elements.
The goal of this class is for each student to create one graphic essay, or one chapter of a longer graphic novel or memoir, that they will “workshop” with the whole group. You may come with a story you’re already working on, or you may discover one through our exercises. I’m especially interested in personal stories from memory, but all genres of comic storytelling are welcome.
Have little to no experience with drawing? You are especially welcome! There are, you will discover, many ways to tell stories with images. Are you an expert, professional drawer? Also great! The best workshops are often composed of the biggest variety of experience levels.
